Two Forward, One Back

28 Jan

This is what our bathroom looked like when we first moved in.  I had my issues with this for sure:  green carpet (who carpets a bathroom?), an ancient peeling laminate vanity, a toilet older than both j & i, floral wallpaper, FAKE tiled walls, the complete absence of a shower.

In the last year we managed to almost completely gut the bathroom.  The only original things that remained were the cats iron tub we had no way to remove as well as the window and light fixture above the sink.  We successfully installed a new sink, toilet, and shower.  We also tiled the floor and shower.  We repaired the damaged walls and ceilings, primed and painted and installed a light and fan.

The problems however started almost immediately after we completed the bulk of the work.  The fan we installed didn’t seem to draw out enough of the moisture when we would shower so there would be water pooling on the ceiling and dripping down the walls.  We started to make sure we showered with the door open and it lessened things but didn’t solve it by any means.  A couple weeks ago though we noticed parts of the ceiling had began to peel and the wall had small bubbles forming and the paint felt damp/tacky to the touch.  So we decided this weekend we would begin the repair and to finish up a few loose ends we had been putting off.  I’ll wait to show you the finished room but I will show you a couple rooms I loved and thought about when we were redoing things.

I apologize for not remembering where I found this from. If anyone can help me link it I would greatly appreciate it.

year one.

21 Oct

so we made it through the first year and then some & it was in no way what we expected.  everything took longer.  there was less time, less money and more arguments than we could have possibly dreamed.  but as cheesy as it is to say i think we’re all the better for it.

things are getting done.  slowly but theres progress.  and i really do promise this time to actually update this thing every now and then to share some of it.  i know that 2010 is winding down and ive done a terrible job at sharing news and projects but there have been some big things:

+  we got a dog!  his name is falkor.  hes two and a half – an old english sheepdog – massively goofy and the greatest birthday present a girl could ask for.

+  we planted a garden and it was decently successful.  we learned a lot to help with next years attempt and are expanding the beds so we can can grow even more deliciousness.

+  i got a new job.  after five years at the museum with my career and savings account going nowhere – karma was on my side and only one day after being let go i was offered a grown up job.  monday-friday with health benefits and a real salary.  its a touch boring and im probably actually overqualified but its a good place holder.  it allowed us to pay for the wedding without taking on any debt, gave us weekends off together which had NEVER happened before (i hadnt had a sunday off that wasnt a national holiday in over three years) and had put us in a position to you know – afford heat this winter.  so for now ill take it in all its managerial glory.

+  we got married!  there will be more on this later and probably some of the ridiculous projects i undertook in the attempt to  throw a nice bash for next to nothing.  but whats more important is its finally official.  no more planning or worrying or childish fighting because now j is legally stuck with me.  so if he does change his mind theres at least some paperwork hell have to deal with first.

+  we got to go on a honeymoon.  it was just a couple days down at lost river modern but it was great.  perfect weather.  calm & quiet.  best nights sleep ever.  after the marathon wedding weekend and all the hubbub leading up to it – it was just so great to hang out just j & i.  even the four+ hour car ride was just what we needed.

+  my big brother got married too!  just a month after us my only brother got married and i took his wedding photos.  i cried like a baby because thats what i do.  but even better was the car ride to the catskills, ny.  just knowing that we can spend eight hours together after only a couple hours of sleep and actually want to talk to each other still when we get where were going is a great feeling.

theres more, tons more actually but theres no need to recap the last ten months for you so these highlights will have to do.  but from here on out there will be pictures and updates, maybe even a few how tos every now and then.
